Hayley and Stephanie Painter grew up as the fourth generation on their family's dairy farm in Pennsylvania's northern tier, working alongside their father, Clinton Painter, who still farms the land they grew up on.
Rather than sell their milk into the commodity market and watch its value get captured somewhere else in the supply chain, the sisters built their own brand on top of it: Painterland Sisters, an organic, Icelandic-style skyr yogurt made from their own farm's milk.
The brand has since grown into more than 5,000 retail doors across all 50 states, including a national listing at Whole Foods — proof, in their own telling, that a family dairy can go direct-to-brand and keep its name on the label instead of disappearing into someone else's supply chain.
